Expenditure and Income

1.     Household Expenditure

There is a significant gap between the amount of urban and rural household expenditures. For example, the average expenditure of the urban households is 53,485 yuan, whereas the average rural household spends 27,295 yuan, accounting for a merely 51% of the former amount. The coefficient of variation, defined as the ratio of the standard variation to the mean, of household expenditure is 1.53 for the urban sample and 2.19 for the rural one. This suggests that household expenditure is more unequal in rural areas than in the urban.

2.     Special Topic: Household Income and Education Expenditure

Table 3 shows that household expenditures on education account for about 11% of household income. This value is roughly the same for both urban and rural households. However, education expenditure is of some rigidity, meaning a certain amount of money has to be spent to meet minimum requirements. This rigidity in education expenditure therefore implies a heavier burden for low income households. As Table 4 shows, while the average household income of the bottom 25% income group is 856 yuan, its average education expenditure is 3,176 yuan, about 3.7 times their income. This means these families have to borrow money to finance the education of their family members. For the households in the bottom 25% - 50% group, the average education expenditure is 4,074 yuan, accounting for 38% of the average household income. Again, this indicates education expenditure is a serious financial burden for this group.
